Resources To Help With Immediate Hunger - Food Banks And Box Programs
A food bank is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes food to hunger-relief charities. Food banks act as food storage and distribution depots for smaller front line agencies; and usually do not themselves give out food directly to people struggling with hunger.
Children struggling with hunger come from families who are struggling, too. Children facing hunger often grow up in a family where a parent or parents also face hunger.

What Is The Difference Between A Food bank, Food Pantry and Soup Kitchens?A food bank solicits, stores and distributes large donations of food, donations that a single food pantry could not accept because of a lack of storage capacity at their facility. Food banks feed the needs of hungry people by distributing the donations they receive to a large number of member agencies, such as food pantries, soup kitchens, meal programs, drug treatment centers, and senior care centers.
A food pantry provides three-day food packages to families that have a place to live, but not enough food. These packages are designed to provide nutritionally balanced meals. Soup kitchens serve individuals in need of a hot meal, the only meal of the day for many of them. Most soup kitchens serve a full, balanced meal, and some prepare and deliver meals to the homebound, as well. |
How does the Feeding America's network of food banks work?Getting nourishing, safe food to people facing hunger requires a robust infrastructure and a high degree of coordination.
1. Securing Food Food banks secure donations from national food and grocery manufacturers, retailers, shippers, packers and growers and from government agencies and other organizations. They have staff that work closely with the partners to match excess food with the food banks that most need it. 2. Shipping and Storage The network of food banks receive and safely stores donated food and grocery products. Most supports it member food banks with training, oversight and equipment grants to ensure perishable and non-perishable food is handled and stored properly. |
3. Distributing Food
The food banks distribute food and grocery items through food pantries and meal programs that serve families, children, seniors and individuals at risk of hunger. 4. Supporting the people we serve The nationwide network of food banks also supports programs that improve food security among the people we serve; educates the public about the problem of hunger; and advocates for legislation that protects people from going hungry. Individuals, charities, businesses and government all have a role in ending hunger. |

“35 million people in the U.S. are hungry or don’t know where their next meal is coming from, and 13 million of them are children. If another country were doing this to our children, we’d be at war.” Jeff Bridges
